TRAI releases data on telephone subscribers for August 2014

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the telephone subscriber base in India increased from 946.40 million at the end of July 2014 to 951.84 million at the end of August 2014, registering a growth of 0.57 per cent.

The share of urban subscribers has increased from 562.43 million at the end of July 2014 to 566.60 million at the end of August 2014. Further, the share of rural subscribers has increased from 383.97 million to 385.25 million during the same period.  As per TRAI, the overall teledensity increased from 76 per cent at the end of July 2014 to 76.36 per cent at the end of August 2014.

The country's total wireless subscriber base increased from 918.72 million at the end of July 2014 to 924.32 million at the end of August 2014, registering a monthly growth of 0.61 per cent. The overall wireless teledensity in India reached 74.16 per cent as on end-August 2014.

As of August 2014, private operators held 90.16 per cent of the wireless market, while state-owned operators - Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) together held 9.84 per cent market share.

Meanwhile, the number of broadband subscribers increased from 70.81 million at the end of July 2014 to 74.31 million at the end of August 2014, exhibiting the monthly growth rate of 4.95 per cent.
